back to the media glade? go home?
i'm a HUGE podcast girlie. if i'm not listening to a youtube drama stream that's going to perminantly alter my brain chemistry for the worse, i'm listening to a podcast.
The Antiquarium of Sinister Happenings is a combo of the SCP Foundation and The Magnus Archives. I tried The Magnus Archives, but they weren't for me. The SCP Foundation however... just my cup of tea. This podcast is weekly(ish) stories about the artifacts in the Antiquarium. They're a little lax on trigger warnings, so make sure to check the episode description before you listen. Other than that, I really love these. They're a lot of fun and they're voiced by real people who sound like real people.
I love them, your honor. The Apocalypse Players are a Call of Cthulhu actual play podcast and they are also my favorite Call of Cthulhu actual play podcast. Dom, Joseph, Dan, and Dannan are fucking delightful. Never have I loved a group of English actors more outside of whatever was going on with Hammer Studios in the 1960s. I will say, Dannan is my favorite player and DM. All of his scenarios are based off of MR James stories (who I also love tbh and my favorite short story by him is this one). However, all of their scenarios - whether in house written or pre-made - are just the best. I've listened and relisted to them dozens of times and they delight me every time.
The Arkham Files is another Call of Cthulhu actual play podcast. This one is six dudes who are cousins? Brothers? I literally have no actual idea lmao. But they all sound like the same guy, so I'm gunna say brothers. Oh and One Guy isn't a brother or a cousin, he's just There. Love him. This one is more silly in tone than a lot of other Call of Cthulhu podcasts and honestly it's great to see a comedic take on the setting. We've got not!Indiana Jones, Dr Simmy, Mary Beth Beth Beth, a DND birthday campaign where someone is a dragon version of Randy Savage, and, rest assured, someone is going to die!
The Belief Hole is a paranormal podcast staring Jeremy, John, and Chris. They're a set of twins and their older brother. I have no concept of who is who lmao. I know Jeremy and Chris are the twins and John is the other brother and mostly I'm just annoyed that their parents didn't chose Jeremy and John for the twin names! I like alliteration, okay? The episodes are fun and cover a variety of topics without getting to deep into the conspiracy theory weeds. Their website is a little bit heavy on the gen AI >:(, but the episodes are all human made and every episode has a page with sources included so you can do some further reading if you want. My favoirite recent episode is about mimics and creatures that lure you away from the path. I listened to it at work and it was genuinely terrifying. It made me think about the Pied Piper of Hamelin.
The Cryptonaut Podcast is my favorite podcast. I've listened to all 300+ episodes at least three times over and I'm fixing to do another listen through soon. Imagine, if you will, you're at your grandmother's house in upstate New York. It's pretty much in the middle of the woods with nothing else around. You walk out onto the back porch to find your three uncles deep in conversation. Your Uncle Marc is trying to convince your Uncle Bobby and Uncle Chris that the world is not only flat, but it's also hollow and full of lizard people. Uncle Chris isn't impressed and he brings up that one time Uncle Marc ran away from home when they were kids and hid in a dumpster for a full day. Uncle Marc brushes him off. There was a girl involved! Where else was he supposed to go? Uncle Bobby is trying to talk Uncle Marc out of his ideas, but somehow ends up agreeing and now they're talking about how the moon isn't real. This has been going on for three hours. That's it. That's the podcast.
Monsters Among Us is the spiritual successor to Coast to Coast with Art Bell. It's a call in show where people send their true, mostly first person, stories in and Derek Hayes plays them and adds commentary and context. It's super interesting and it even brought a few different paranormal phenomenon to light. There's also a kid's version of the show where kids call in and tell stories about their own paranormal encounters.
Sasquatch Tracks is a more science based approach to the possibility that bigfoot exists. It's hosted by Micah Hanks and a few of his local friends. They encourage acts of "citizen science" and have even given short tutorials on what you need to collect evidence and document the world around you. They're fun to listen to. Micah has a nice voice and the stuff they talk about is genuinely interesting.
This Paranormal Life is more of a comedy podcast than a paranormal podcast. I'm linking their YouTube page because they're the best when you watch them. I love Kit and Rory, they're funny and maybe also running a cult but don't worry about that just your commemorative solid gold coin and your robes and have fun!
more to come!
