Appearance

Physical Description

Rosie is 5'5", she has curly red hair that falls just below her shoulders, she has hazel eyes that turn more and more gold the closer it gets to the full moon, she's muscular from blacksmithing, she's pale with lots of freckles, scars, and tattoos. She has both ears pierced six times. The top five piercings are permanent golden hoops and the bottom piercing is just a regular ear piercing. Her maternal grandmother was Moroccan, but the only thing she inherited was her curly hair and hazel eyes.

Clothing Style

Punk - but make it practical. Lots of black clothes. She loves band t-shirts and mini-skirts. Her favorite pair of shoes are a beat up pair of army surplus combat boots that she keeps repairing and is going to wear until they literally fall apart.

One of her favorite pieces of clothing is a pair of overalls that her mom bought for her when she was a teenager. She keeps altering them to fit and her mother has mended and patched them dozens of times over the years. She also embroiders them (a skill her mother taught her) whenever she's bored. They're a patchwork story of her mother's love for her and she would wear them 24/7 if she could.

Distinguishing Features

Scars

"Permanent Smile" on her cheeks, slash on her throat close to her chin where it was cut, her nose is a little crooked from being broken several times (it leans to the left), bullet wound on her right collar bone, and a variety of other scars from being alive and scrapping a lot.

Tattoos

Rosie's tattoos (all of these, except the roses, are black line work unless otherwise stated):

  • roses and vines from her wrists all the way up her arms, around her shoulders and up the sides of her neck
  • a large snarling wolf head facing forward on her back that she loves showing off with backless shirts
  • under the wolf head is a living wolf snarling at a skeletal wolf at an angle that kinda cradles the wolf's head
  • DEATH on the back of one hand and GLORY across the back of another with a bunch of random witchy finger adornment tattoos
  • a jug of moonshine tattooed on the side of her left leg near her ankle with "Winchester's Finest" around it in script on a banner
  • a sacred heart tattoo in the center of her chest that is held by the thorns from her roses
  • under the heart is a sword that reaches from her sternum to her bellybutton
  • the pommel of the sword is the full moon and the phases of the moon are tattooed under her boobs
  • under the sword is a skull on her lower stomach that's sitting on a bed of thorns/roses with two knives tattooed on her hips pointing down on either side of the skull
  • a many-eyed seraph tattooed on her right thigh
  • a medusa head on her left thigh
  • seven swords above her left knee piercing the knee and showing up below it
  • a fanged skull with its jaws surrounding her right knee

Skills, Talents, Education, & Occupation

Mundane

Highest Level of Schooling: GED

Special Training/Skills: Her father taught her how to home-brew liquor, shoe horses, and make her own horseshoes. She threw herself into studying blacksmithing and farrier work after her suicide attempt and she's now respected both as Absalom Winchester's daughter and as a skilled craftsman in her own right. Outside of her more illegal means of getting money, she makes and sells jewelry with her blacksmithing skills and has nurtured many different artistic talents.

Languages: Rosie speaks English and Cajun French.

Magical

While Rosie's mother does have strong magical talent and her father is a magical creature (and she was also born a magical creature), she has minimal magical talent of her own. She can do some simple, entry-level spells like lighting cigerettes with a snap of her fingers.

The only magical talent she truly has is Second Sight. Second Sight is the ability to see the unseen. Most mundane folk think of the Second Sight as only being able to see ghosts, but Rosie can see through most glamours in addition to being able to see and communicate with spirits.

Occupation

Rosie is a farrier, blacksmith, and moonshiner for her family's businesses. She also does farrier work for her cousin Henry's circus and even sometimes does performances.

Roles: blacksmithing, shoeing horses, smuggling moonshine

Responsibilities: not getting caught by the ATF, working on orders for her father, taking custom commissions

Relationships

Family

Rosie knows and is on good terms with most of her family. There are a few of her Moroccan cousins that she only knows via FaceTime, but she tries to maintain contact with them every few months.

Note: I have a lot more relatives mapped out for Rosie, so these are just the close ones.

Aristide Winchester - Rosie's eldest brother

Arsène Winchester - Rosie's second oldest brother

Augustine Winchester - Rosie's youngest brother

Bahija bint Abla al-Salim Quinton - the closest of Rosie's Moroccan cousins

Henry Quinton - the ringmaster of a circus that camps on the Winchester property during the off season and Rosie's cousin-in-law

Friends

Rosie is a bit of a social butterfly and has a fairly large circle.

Jane Halfpenny-O'Rourke - Rosie's childhood best friend, married to her second cousin Yasmina

Yasmina Halfpenny-O'Rourke - Rosie's second cousin

Lucky - a ghoul and a member of the Quinton Family Circus

Fergus McCarthy - a local bar owner (and head of the McCarthy crime family) Rosie used to work for him as a bartender

Isidor “Izzy” Tejada - Rosie's AA sponsor and good friend

Love Interests

Rosie has had a variety of romantic partners and is currently single (for now ).

Enemies

She doesn't really have any enemies. There are plenty of people she's beefed or scuffled with over the years, but she doesn't hold grudges against any of them. If someone pisses her off enough to gain full enemy status, they don't last for long.

Personal Background

Childhood

Rosie Winchester was born sometime in mid-July around thirty years ago. Her childhood was pretty uneventful - for a Winchester childhood, that is. She was well-loved by her family and her friends and did at least an okay job at school. At 12 her father taught her how to drive for the first time and she's been a menace to roadways everywhere ever since.

Teen Years

When Rosie was sixteen she was walking home alone from a school function when she was snatched by three men in a white van. They took her to a secluded area and locked her in a shed for two days before coming back for her. The leader of the three threatened to make her perform oral sex on him before settling for cutting her mouth open "like one of Jack the Ripper's little whores." He saw her fangs and chickened out before cutting her throat and tossing her in the river.

The blade he used wasn't silver, so it didn't work. She floated down the river until she was spotted from the banks by a novitiate at the local nunnery. Sister Mary Magdalene ran inside and fetched the Mother Superior. Mother Therese took Sister Mary Magdalene and three other nuns down to the river where they pulled Rosie from the water and took her inside where the Mother superior sewed his throat and face back together.

They returned her to her parents as soon as possible. Catherine Winchester tucked her baby girl into bed and cared for her day and night for the next three months. The day she turned seventeen, Rosie tried to kill herself. She drifted between life and death for a full week. While she was unconscious, she dreamed of the Beast Lord of the Feywild and other fantastic figures. At the end of the week, she dreamed of Death himself.

Death pressed a kiss to her forehead and said it wasn't time for her to go yet. He sent her home. When Rosie woke up, her mother waited approximately how long it took for her body to heal and then immediately put her into therapy. The therapy worked - for the most part.

20s

In her early twenties, she turned to alcohol to dull her feelings and was borderline alcoholic until around 25 when her mother staged yet another intervention.

Her mother went to the local chapter of Alcoholic's Anonymous and begged them to make her daughter go to the meetings. The leader of the chapter gently told her that wanting to quit drinking was a personal choice. Izzy Tejada asked “How much will you give me to bring her?” and drove his beat up four door to the Winchester house, threw Rosie in the trunk, hauled her ass to the local Methodist church, and duck taped her to a chair. He did this once a week every week until Rosie was sober and they were fast friends. He's still her sponsor to this day.

At 26, ten years after almost dying for the first time, Rosie hunted down the man who tried to rape and kill her. She found him strung out picking trash out of the local Home Depot's dumpster to sell. He was never seen again.

Currently

Rosie is currently living at home and working at both her father's legitimate farrier's / blacksmithing business and running illegal home-brewed whiskey for him at night.

Until, that is, a certain wizard comes sniffing around their door...

Family History

The Winchesters

The Winchesters are a family of petty criminals and civil dissidents. If there's a law made that doesn't suit them, they break it. If they see a law as unjust, they'll defy it. It all started with their English-born ancestor, Henry Winchester, being kicked out of England for horse thievery. He emigrated to the new world (the old world was decidedly hostile) and found himself in French Canada where he made friends with the local Indigenous peoples. Well, the French weren't exactly kind to the Indigenous people in French Canada and that didn't sit right with Henry Winchester. So he asked his new friends what the quickest way to gain power over their oppressors was. His new friends laughed and said he might as well ask the moon for all the good it would do him against the French.

So he did. And the moon answered. Enter Célestine, The Great Lady of the Sky and little known goddess of the moon and stars. She hadn't been called on for some time so she was delighted to grant his request. As long as Henry and any of his decedents served her loyally and vowed to root out evil in the places that her light could not touch, she would give them power and long life. Henry thought this was a pretty good deal so he pledged his fealty to the moon goddess and she made him a werewolf.

He used his newfound power to chase the French settlers out of "their" land for just long enough for his Indigenous friends to escape. Later in life he took a French wife and moved with the rest of the Acadians down to Louisiana.

It's unknown if this story is true or not. There are plenty of ways to become a "Child of the Moon" that don't involve pledging your undying loyalty to a moon goddess. But the Winchester family has taken their duty seriously over the years. From stealing from the rich to feed to poor to smuggling escaped slaves out of the south during the Civil War, the Winchester family has continued to do their best to spread the light of the full moon to even the darkest corners of the earth.

The latest generation of the Winchester family is spreading the light by taking in runaways that the system is too overworked and underpaid to care for and giving them a safe place to stay until they can figure things out.

The al-Salims & Polignacs

Note: This section is unfinished and contains some broad thoughts on Rosie's maternal family.

Rosie's maternal great-grandmother was a Amazigh woman from Morocco named Fatima al-Salim. She was a powerful witch married to nomadic mage named Hafez al-Salim. She was greatly respected in the Moroccan magical community and the leader of the Casablanca Magic Circle, the largest coven in Morocco, for five consecutive decades. She lived to the impressive age of 105 and followed her husband to the afterlife after only a month without him.

Fatima had one daughter: Hafsa al-Salim, Rosie's grandmother. Hafsa inherited her parents' magical talent and was proficient in both mundane academics and magical ones. When she was in her late twenties, Hafsa was traveling in Rabat and met a Frenchman there on vacation. Aristide Xavier Maurice Fabien, Baron de Polignac, was a younger son of the Polignac family and was instantly smitten with the witty and intelligent Hafsa. They soon fell in love and Hafsa moved with Aristide to France.

Catherine Juri Elizabeth Ann Polignac is their only daughter. Like her mother before her, Catherine has both magical and mundane talents. Her mother emphasized both a magical and mundane education for her daughter, while her father made sure that she was educated in the ways of French nobility and could hold her own in any conversation that was thrown her way.

At twenty, it was finally time for her debut. The night of le Bal, Catherine was trying to escapte a particularly assinine member of the French aristocracy and wondering why they ever did away with the guillotine, when she stumbled through the kitchen door and into the arms of a red-headead stranger. Enter Absalom Winchester. Absalom was on a gap year and also on the run from the American law. It was love at first sight and it's been love ever since. Catherine and Absalom had a whirlwind romance that lasted all of a year before she threw away her chance and land and titles for a life running from the revenue men.

Their life wasn't exciting for too long. A little bit of Winchester money in the pockets of the local sheriff saw to their peaceful life in Lune-de-loup, Louisiana.
