This is it. This is the WIP that made me do all that world building that I didn't do in 2018. All that world building that I knew I would eventually have to do. What was I doing in the meantime? Fucking nothing lmao I was working full time at a soul-sucking job and not doing anything creative. But 2025 and 2026 are all about getting my creativity back, so here we are.
Rosie Winchester has finally found some stability in her life. She's thirty-five, mostly healthy, and hey, maybe this will finally be the year that she quits smoking. Maybe. That all goes down the drain when her mother calls her into the kitchen and asks her to help the local wizard find her patron.
Enter Makepeace Taft. He's pretentious, superior, and the last time Rosie saw him, he was insulting her mother's coven. In short, he's the worst kind of ass and she'd rather never see him again. And now she was slogging through a nearby swamp while he floated a few inches above the water.
Maman Brigitte, loa, Catholic saint, and witch's patron waits at the end of their journey. What will happen when Makepeace insults her beyond what offerings can repair? What will happen when she binds Rosie and Makepeace together for his sins? Will Rosie just drown him and be done with it? Or will she pick away at his defences until she finds the man underneath the tough outer shell?
It's her. I have had Rosie as an OC since I read Eragon and needed someone to ride dragons and be badass. Her name wasn't rosie then, it was Arya because I hated Ayra for some reason. (I had a crush on Eragon. That was the reason.) Then she was Mary Ellen for a little while and now she knows better than to tell anyone what her real first name is.
I've played around with Rosie for YEARS. She's been with me for every fandom I've ever been in and hopefully this will be her forever home.
Rosie Winchester is a woman in her mid-thirties still living with her parents. (By choice; she works for both of her father's businesses.) She been through a lot of things over the years and she's been through therapy and AA to fix herself up as much as she can. She's got red hair, too many tattoos to count, and a pair of surplus army boots she's owned since she was 15. Oh, and she's a werewolf - a gift from her father.
She also now has The Wizard.
This mother fucker sprang into my mind fully formed while I was watching DND on YouTube. I was staring (disrespectfully) at the DM and thinking: "I should make him into a character." and Makepeace was born. Which DND channel? Which DM? Not telling. He never needs to know that he inspired a redheaded wizard with a penchant for intellectual superiority and lightening.
Makepeace is a changeling who was raised by puritans in the late 1600s. When he turned 15, he tried to free his sister from an abusive suitor and was hung for his efforts. He still has the scar around his throat from where the rope cut and burned him before the local wizard cut him down. This is how his magical journey started.
During ever war from the War of 1812 to WWII, the American government engaged his services as a battle mage. People talked about him in hushed tones. They said he could "call down the wrath of the gods."
In [current year], Makepeace is living in Louisiana in relative obscurity. Until, that is, one of the local mundane business folk contracts him to get rid of a a pesky spirit on his property. Until he needs to know the name of the first woman buried on a piece of land. Until he needs the help of a local coven and the daughter of the high priestess'.
